A game engine for game developers

Nodes and scenes and scripts that reload instantly.

For game developers — the Script workspace.

Hot reload code, reuse components in any node and see results instantly.

The Script workspace on examples/hello: the script open beside the node tree, with the Output dock below

Features

  • A tree of nodes. Nodes with scripts attached.
  • Scripts reload instantly. Hot reload in milliseconds.
  • Scenes are TOML. Readable, diffable, reviewable in a pull request.
  • Export a single executable. Bytecode, scenes and assets go into one executable, one per platform.

Components

Build everything with nodes and components.

[[nodes]]
name = "Ball"
script = { source = "scripts/ball.rn" }
transform = { position = [0.0, 6.0, 0.0] }
body3d = { kind = "dynamic" }
collider3d = { kind = "sphere", radius = 0.5 }
shape3d = { kind = "sphere", radius = 0.5 }

transform, body3d, collider3d and shape3d are components you can add to nodes.

Scripts are Rune: Rust's syntax, instant reload, async/await. A script is a file attached to a node, with init, update and other methods.

Combine the nodes, components and scripts to create complex games.

The editor

Edit the code, the nodes and play the game in one screen.

  • Script editor. Edit a script beside the running scene.
  • Debugger. Add breakpoints directly in the Balaur editor.
  • Play in editor. Run the scene in the viewport.
