About

Balaur is a 2D & 3D node-based game engine in Rust. Deterministic tick, TOML scenes, Rune scripts that hot reload in milliseconds. Free, MIT.

Who

Dragos Daian, appsinacup. Started Balaur.

Sébastien Crozet, dimforge.

Everything else the engine stands on: Built on.

Why

  • Godot Rapier Physics makes the physics server deterministic. The rest of the game is not. Balaur makes the whole tick deterministic.
  • A bug fix in Godot waits on review and a release. Here it ships the same day.
  • Longer: From Godot Rapier to Balaur.

Where it is

  • First commit August 2026. Version 0.1.0. Builds from source; no binary release yet.
  • Compare says when to pick Godot, Bevy or Fyrox instead. Roadmap says what is missing.

How it is run

  • Principles: what the engine optimises for, and how the project is run.
  • MIT, no CLA. Nothing is for sale: no fees, no revenue share, no paid tier.

The name

Romanian for dragon, and Balaur bondoc, the Transylvanian dromaeosaur with two sickle claws on each foot. The mark is the claws. Files on Branding.
